TechCamp - Department of State

Global workshops connecting people to co-create innovative tech solutions for tackling the real world’s biggest challenges.

Challenge

TechCamp is a public diplomacy program hosted in the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State. The program brings together journalists, non-governmental organizations, academics and others to participate in two-day workshops with the goal of identifying solutions to global challenges using technology.
TechCamp has conducted more than 40 TechCamp workshops all over the world, training more than 2,100 participants from more than 110 countries.
The program needed a new, modern web presence to keep participants informed regarding upcoming events, and to showcase both past events and the program’s lasting outcomes.

"Wait, that's a government website?! Cool!"

Understanding the global audiences needs and aligning those to the program's goals for the new site was crucial for success. As part of our human centered design process research, design and iterative testing were all used to define our approach

  • Update and user tested sitemap created to streamline user flows and aid in discovery

  • Created wireframes and lo-fidelity prototypes to content and functionality

  • Usability testing of designs and prototypes to validate approach ahead of development

Results

  • Delivered a new website that seamlessly blends functional needs with an easy to use interface.

  • Interactive map allows visitors to easily explore upcoming techcamps and outcomes

  • Revised branding that positions TechCamp as an innovator in the government space.
